In order for a project to be classified as successful,\u00a0it must satisfy three criteria: its outputs must be of the\u00a0agreed quality, they must be delivered\u00a0in the agreed timescale, and they must be delivered at the agreed price.<\/p>\n

The two studies below\u00a0show that around a quarter\u00a0of the software projects involved failed catastrophically (i.e. cancelled or delivered too late\u00a0to be\u00a0of use).<\/p>\n

Furthermore, a significant number of projects in each study were challenged (i.e. they did not meet one or more of the criteria for success).<\/p>\n
